    The Juan Santamaría International Airport is the main airport in Costa Rica. It is located near the city of Alajuela, 20 km west of downtown San Jose.

    • Taxis in Costa Rica are red with a yellow triangle on the door which contains its plate.
    • It is the taxi driver's obligation to use the meter ("La Maria") to determine the cost of a trip.
    • It is unlikely that you find a taxi driver who speaks a language other than Spanish or a little English.

Up to this point you go halfway. The next destination is the Coopetraca terminal which is in the same city and can be reached on foot.

Note: Although it is not the official stop, it is common for "La Pavona" buses to stop at this terminal to pick up passengers from San José. You can ask this to the staff of the terminal and maybe you will save the trip on foot to the terminal of Coopetraca.

    • In this terminal arrive the buses coming from San José and belongs to the company Guapileños, to take the next bus you must go to the terminal of Coopetraca R.L.
    • This terminal has shops, restrooms and minisuper.

    Before you live Cariari it is very important that you take into account the following:

    • There are no banks in Tortuguero. Although there is an ATM, it is important that you carry enough cash in case it is out of service.
    • There are no pharmacies Tortuguero. If you have a condition that requires a specific medication, make sure you have the necessary amount or have it available in Cariari.
    • There is no post office in Tortuguero. Although there are some shops authorized by Correos de Costa Rica for the sale of stamps, it is common that the stamps get sold out by long periods.

In this terminal you will have to buy the ticket for Finca la Pavona which is where you will take the boat that will take you to Tortuguero. From here, there are four buses a day. Click on "more info" for schedules.

    • The center of Cariari is a small place, with narrow streets and full of people and stores.
    • This terminal has shops, restaurants, restrooms, minisuper and ATMs.

    The bus and boat schedules are coordinated so that when you arrive at Finca la Pavona there will be public and private boats waiting. So do not be alarmed if the bus suffers any setback on the road as the boats will not leave until the bus has arrived.

    Cariari is characterized by being a warm place, so make sure you wear light and comfortable clothes. Remember also that you will be in a tropical climate so that sudden downpours are common.

     

    When you are in Cariari try not to give in to insistent guides who will try to sell you tours or accommodation arguing that you can run out of space when you arrive to Tortuguero.

    In this place you will find a restaurant where you can eat a snack or use the bathroom. This is where you have to buy the boat ticket.

    This schedule is stable for most of the year, however, during the dry season the river flow can drop considerably causing some trips to be temporarily suspended or their schedule modified.

    • The public service boats are properly identified as such. They are boats with great capacity and have the requirements demanded by the MOPT (Ministry of Public Works and Transport) like roof, insurance and life jacket, among others.
    • In high season the company in charge of the public transport doubles the quantity of boats in order to satisfy the demand of passengers.
    • The cost of the ticket is ¢ 1,600 ($ 4) per person, however there is an extra charge of ¢ 1000 ($ 2) for the luggage, which will travel in another boat.
    • You will also find private haulers that will take you to Tortuguero for a cost similar to public transportation.
