Getting to Tortuguero through Limón

This is a fairly inexpensive way to travel to Tortuguero, although slightly more expensive and time consuming than through Cariari.   It will cost you about 35 US dollars for this route.

From the airport:  If you are coming straight from the Juan Santamaria Airport, the easiest way is to take a taxi for 18 USD (US Dollars) to the Terminal Gran Caribe Bus Station.  A much cheaper, and slightly more complicated option is to take one of the many public buses that run from directly outside of the airport to San Jose (the bus costs about $1 USD), and then either:1) taking a taxi to the Terminal Gran Caribe Bus Station. (it will cost about 3 USD from here)2) walk to Terminal Gran Caribe Bus Station (click here to see map)

From Terminal Gran Caribe Bus Station:    This bus station is also referred to as “Caribeños”.  The buses that leave from here are very modern, secure, and comfortable.  They have under carriage compartments to stow your luggage which locks and is monitored by bus station personnel when it is open while loading.    Here you can buy a ticket for a bus leaving to Limon.  Buses leave every 45 minutes starting at 5am until 7pm. When you get to Limon (it takes about 2 1/2 hours), take the local bus to the docks in Moin (they run every 30 minutes from 5am to 11pm, the trip takes about a half an hour). Or you can take a taxi to the docks which will cost around 5 to 7 US dollars (click to see a picture of docks at Moin). At the docks you can buy a boat ticket to Tortuguero from Bananero (also referred to as Ruben Viajes Bananero) which will cost around 35 US dollars one way, and 70 US dollars round-trip.  The boat will take about 4 hours to get to Tortuguero.  You can also arrange for a private boat operator, but this will cost quite a bit more (click here to see this route). You will get to Tortuguero around 2pm.
