My name is Owen Lackwood Escocia. I was born in Nicaragua and my parents are Nicaraguan. We moved to Costa Rica when I was four years old. I grew up in Puerto Limón.

After working for export companies and in different areas of the tourism industry, I became a naturalist guide in Tortuguero in 2001. As I began working in Tortuguero, this area became an outdoor classroom for me. I learned everything I could about the rain forest and its treasures.
The Village of Tortuguero
The village of Tortuguero was founded in the 1930's by a Columbian family from San Andres. They came to Tortuguero to make a living from exporting coconut and from the sea turtles. In the 40's american lumber businesses arrived to profit from the resources of the jungle. Since those businesses provided work, the first immigration to Tortuguero began, mostly from Nicaragua. Currently the village of Tortuguero consists of an area of 5 kilometers of public land and 26 kilometers of protected land. There are approximately 1,500 inhabitants, mostly immigrants, and all of them totally dedicated to tourism. In the village we have a primary and secondary school. There is also a clinic, churches, and different relitions as well as various hotels and cabinas. |
